Canadians can expect to pay more taxes in 2026: Franco Terrazzano

As Canadians look ahead to 2026, many might be hoping for a fresh start, perhaps even a break. Unfortunately, according to Franco Terrazzano, federal director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF), the new year is set to bring more of the same—or worse—when it comes to our tax burden.

The CTF cautions that taxes will continue their upward trend, with Prime Minister Carney’s government poised to increase payroll, alcohol, and the industrial carbon taxes this very year. If there’s one resolution Canadians could truly benefit from in 2026, it’s a significant reduction in the massive amount of money we hand over to the government.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is urging Prime Minister Carney to offer precisely that: relief where Canadians feel it most—in their bank accounts.

“Canadians are already overtaxed and need serious tax cuts to make life more affordable and make our economy more competitive. But at best, the New Year will bring a mixed bag for Canadian taxpayers,” stated Franco Terrazzano.

Terrazzano recently appeared on Thursday night’s episode of The Ezra Levant Show to delve deeper into his “little optimistic,” yet realistic, outlook for the year ahead. He emphasized that Canadians are already “way overtaxed,” and this doesn’t even account for the country’s colossal debt, which saddles taxpayers with interest payments exceeding “more than a billion dollars every single week.”

It’s clear that 2026 is shaping up to be another challenging year for Canadian wallets. The call from the CTF is simple: give taxpayers a much-needed break.
